Help Shape the Future for Young People in Aotearoa
Ipsos is seeking motivated, resilient, and community-minded Community Interviewers to work on the Young Aotearoa Survey, an important nationwide study gathering the views and experiences of young people and their whānau across New Zealand.
This is a rewarding but demanding field-based role that requires confidence, adaptability, and strong interpersonal skills. As a Community Interviewer, you will engage directly with households, build trust with parents, caregivers, and young people, and support the collection of high-quality survey data that will contribute to a better understanding of the lives and wellbeing of young New Zealanders.
The Young Aotearoa Survey uses a household-based recruitment approach. Community Interviewers will visit selected households, explain the purpose of the research, recruit eligible participants, and facilitate survey participation.
This role requires the ability to confidently engage with people from diverse backgrounds, overcome reluctance to participate, and maintain professionalism in a wide range of situations.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct doorstep recruitment visits to selected households throughout your assigned area.
- Explain the survey and encourage participation from eligible households.
- Build rapport quickly and professionally with parents, caregivers, and young people.
- Effectively address questions, concerns, and reluctance to participate.
- Administer surveys with parents and caregivers.
- Supervise young participants as they independently complete a self-administered survey.
- Ensure all participants have a positive, respectful, and confidential survey experience.
- Accurately record survey information using tablets and online survey platforms.
- Follow all project procedures, ethical requirements, and participant safeguarding protocols.
- Manage appointments, travel, and fieldwork administration independently.
What We're Looking For
Essential Skills & Experience
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Confidence engaging with members of the public in face-to-face settings.
- Strong resilience and the ability to remain positive and professional when encountering refusal or reluctance.
- The ability to build trust and rapport with young people and their families.
- High levels of personal organisation and self-motivation.
- Comfortable working independently and managing your own fieldwork schedule.
- Strong technology skills and confidence using tablets, smartphones, and web-based systems.
- A full driver's licence and access to a reliable vehicle.
Highly Desirable

Flexibility Required
Because many young people and their families are available outside of school and standard working hours, successful candidates must be willing to work flexible schedules, including:
- After-school hours
- Evenings
- Weekends
The ability to accommodate participant availability is critical to success in this role.
Project Timeline :
Pilot Study: Mid-October 2026 to Mid-November 2026
- Successful candidates will participate in a pilot phase designed to test survey processes and participant engagement approaches. This is an excellent opportunity to become familiar with the study and gain hands-on experience before the main fieldwork begins.
Main Study: Mid-December 2026 to Late 2027
- The main survey fieldwork is expected to commence in mid-December 2026. Fieldwork will pause over the Christmas and New Year period before resuming in mid-January 2027. Once restarted, interviewing is expected to continue throughout 2027, providing ongoing work opportunities for high-performing Community Interviewers.
